This tulip was introduced during one of the darkest periods in Dutch history, in 1944, towards the end of the German occupation during World War II. Luckily Queen of Night was not eaten by starving people – people actually did eat tulips as food was running out – and it is still around to be enjoyed each spring. Black is black, like it or not.
Personally I love this tulip. It adds something very special to the world of tulips. See also Black Tie under Mixtures and Combinations.
