Unlike most of our flower bulbs, amaryllis bulbs are primarily for indoors. At room temperature in a vase or in a pot: that is when the amaryllis bulb comes into its own. And that is not the only thing that makes this beautiful flower bulb stand out. It is precisely in the winter that it provides some extra atmosphere with its exuberant colours. Because of the temperature in the living room, it seems like spring for the amaryllis and that is why it is not held back by the winter. Could your home use some colourful cheer in the winter? Then let yourself be surprised by the large variety of colours and types of the amaryllises in our range !
Planting amaryllis bulbs
The amaryllis bulbs in our webshop are dug up in August and then stored at room temperature. This way we guarantee that they will bloom beautifully in your home. Planting an amaryllis is quite easy. Plant the amaryllis bulb in a pot that is half filled with soil, but in such a way that the neck of the bulb protrudes above the soil. Make sure that the soil remains somewhat moist and place the pot in a warm, but not too sunny place, then within six to eight weeks there will be a beautiful amaryllis in your living room.
It is even possible to plant an amaryllis bulb without using soil. Then it needs a vase in which the bulb can stand upright. This way the roots can hang in the water.
Keeping an Amaryllis bulb
Some people enjoy an amaryllis until it has finished blooming and then they throw the amaryllis bulb away. That is not necessary, you can also try to keep your amaryllis bulb . Cut off the stem immediately after flowering, because it needs so much energy that it would otherwise suck the amaryllis bulb dry.
Place the amaryllis bulb - as long as it is not flowering - in the garden or in a pot. Take it out at the beginning of autumn, dry the bulb so that it does not freeze, remove the outer scales and place it in a cool, dark place for a month or two. In December you can plant it in a warm place again and there is a good chance that it will flower again. This way an amaryllis bulb can last for years!
