For the seasoned gardener this is certainly an old acquaintance, Gladiolus callianthus has been in cultivation for more than 100 years. But if you are not yet familiar with this wonderfully scented Gladiolus with its sparkling white flowers, it is definitely recommended.
Like the common Gladiolus, it is not really winter hardy, but it is sometimes written that it can survive well in open winters with little frost. My experience with overwintering the Gladiolus callianthus Murielae in the Dutch winter is not really good, I think our winters are a bit too cold and too wet.
Originally from Ethiopia, this Gladiolus likes warmth, so take that into account when planting and place it in a sunny spot. She likes to stand among the perennials, often she even looks best there. If you harvest it in the autumn, do not store it too cold, around 15 degrees is fine.
This very rewarding plant is suitable for many gardens, grows well in pots and in larger combinations. Jacqueline van der Kloet calls it in her book as a problem-free onion for beginners, but one that bewitches every gardener with its fragrance.
