Beet to Be
It is currently the most frequently asked question after my news blog of about 5 weeks ago in which I wrote about the world championships Beet growing. I truly don't understand, beautiful stories about Dahlias, Begonias and all the other beautiful things that I tell in my stories, and what is in the reader's mind... the beet. The same thing happened to me with our goat Hassan. Once written a little bit in between the lines about Hassan and then people ask you when you meet them: is Hassan okay?
Hassan has turned around the corner
Unfortunately Hassan now only lives in our thoughts, last week she slept in peacefully in her sleep. I know, it sounds strange to sleep in during sleep but it is possible... After all, you can also suddenly wake up when you are already awake. There is a suspicion that she could have become the oldest goat ever. At the time, she came to our garden as a kind of asylum seeker after she had been standing on the corner of the Belkmerweg at the neighbor's farm for more than 10 years (nobody knows exactly how many years) keeping an eye on the intersection. The neighbor moved to a smaller house, and the goat stayed there. That is not nice for the goat, daughter Guus called the neighbor, also years ago, and walked home with the sweet animal. What are we going to call her? Hassan.Sadly, Hassan is no more. We all know it, the sweet animal had a good life, never lacked anything thanks to the good care of Guus, but still, we are a bit sad about it. Hassan was also a Tulip lover in heart and soul. When she managed to get loose again, which happened regularly, you could always find her at the Tulips where she tasted the flowers with great relish. She was especially crazy about pink Tulips.
If there were no tulips on the menu, she knew where to find a dahlia behind our house. Really, just like us, a great lover of flower bulbs. If there were no flower bulbs in bloom, there was no man overboard, then she feasted on all the beautiful things that could be found in the pots on the terrace.
Narcissus ‘Hassan the Goat’
Last summer while working all our Daffodil seedlings Guus already had the idea to name a Daffodil after her. Looked at all the seedling pictures and this big fluffy Daffodil had to be it. A Daffodil with lovely, oversized naughty looking flowers. Now available in the Fluwel Special Narcissus and for the American readers of the Newsblog (who also seem to be coming more and more) can be ordered at www.qdaffs.usTulip ‘Love Story’, available to order from today
Hassan the Goat is a nice goat jump to today's news: the Fluwel main assortment of Daffodils, together with the other spring flowering bulbs such as Tulips, Crocuses, Alliums and all the other beautiful bulbs, can also be ordered again in the Fluwel web shop from today. I know, it's still early, but before you know it, the Fluwel Picking Garden and Show Garden on the Belkmerweg next to the Fluwel warehouse will be open again and there are always visitors who get excited and want to order the Tulips for next autumn.Narcissus ‘Tete a Tete’
I think it will take another week before there is anything to see in our show garden, but all the signs say that spring is about to spring forth in all her intensity. The first bulb fields are starting to show their colours, and it is almost always the Narcissus Tete a Tete that makes the first passers-by (including me) stop to take beautiful photos. Also the first Hyacinth fields started blooming. All flower bulbs have survived the winter well, the weather is nice so it promises to be a beautiful spring. Highly recommended to come and have a look in our neighborhood the Kop van Noord-Holland. And, if you are in the area, also stop by at Land van Fluwel. Cup of coffee, nice lunch (the hamburger is recommended) or if you have the time and feel like it, go into the forest for the barefoot path. And stop by our Picking garden of course. Just do it, great fun.
I'm going to play outside again, the Daffodils are calling. Hey, that's funny, when I started writing I thought I was going to talk about the Beet… digressed a bit 😊
Kind regards,
Carlos van der Veek
